Character Nuggets

“Character transformation often occurs in groups of people working together toward a harmonious goal. Most of the time, rather than dealing with reality we decide to change location and change others. But as Emerson so aptly put it, “No change of circumstance can repair a defect of character.”

— Louis A. Tartaglia, M.D.

Addressing the Health of African-American High School Males

Funded by the Community Engagement and Research Program and supported by Morehouse School of Medicine Prevention Research Center Faculty.

The youth-led project will challenge African-American high school males enrolled in the New Schools at Carver School of Health Sciences & Research to address health issues that demand a change in their behavior and beliefs. Twelve students will be trained to serve as a Youth Outreach Team to organize and lead a Community Health Forum, conduct a Peer Health Intervention in three health risk areas, and practice reducing their own risk factors in those areas. The health promotion is supported by Morehouse School of Medicine faculty and the Communities In School department at Carver.

Youth Public Health Campaign Specialists:

Taking the good news to African-American Males ages 14 to 18

Funded by the Morehouse School of Medicine Prevention Research Center.

The health promotion will train youth participants to create and present a communications campaign to bring attention to a pressing health issue affecting their group. The campaign gives the youth the opportunity to use music, art, the internet, radio or television, or printed materials to speak to their African-American counterparts. The youth health message will be designed to encourage high school males to exert control over their own healthy life outcome. The project will also provide health education and equip males ages 14 to 18 with useful knowledge they can employ in their every day living and give them a platform to positively influence their peers
